Originated the "surf sound" in surf music. Dick Dale and the Deltones. dawn patrol n An early morning, sunrise surf session. decent adj. Describes good surf conditions. "The waves were decent". deck contour n The shape of the deck, or top, of a surfboard. deck grip n Adhesive, shaped deck pads that take the place of wax. deck patch n An extra layer of fiberglass applied to a deck to give it extra strength in high impact areas. deck profile n The outline of a surfboard deep inside adj. Describes a ride deep in the tube deep takeoff n A take-off at the critical, steep, lip-pitching part of the wave. diamond tail n A tail shape that comes to a point. dig a rail v When the side or edge (the rail) cuts or digs into the water. Often happens during a turn and often causes a wipeout. ding n Damage on the surface of the board. A pressure or vfracture in the fiberglass. v When a board is hit and damaged. ding kit n A repair kit for dings. Includes duct tape, resin and catylist, some cloth, sandpaper, and a cup and stirrer. ding repair n Patching, repairing dings on a board. diurnal n High and low tides occurring twice daily in many parts of the world. dolphin n A marine mammal that is very and often surfs with surfers. domed deck n A deck of a surfboard that is rounded rather than flat. It gives a board a wider stringer and more foam volume, consequently more float. doom tube n A tube that is too long to make it out of. double glassed adj. Describes a board with two layers of fiberglass. double overhead n A wave that is twice as high as the surfer riding it. double up v When two waves join or meet. double-wing adj describes a board with two wings on each side. down the face adv Surfing from the top to the bottom of the face. Usually followed by a bottom turn. down the line adv. Where the wave will break some distance from the take off point. drag n Resistance to forward motion caused by a boards bottom shape and breaking edges. dragging a hand v Touching the wall of the wave with the trailing hand. used to slow down to get deeper into a tube. dribble n Small, weak surf drift v When a surfer floats parallel to the beach with the motion of a current n. The act of being moved parallel to the beach with the current. drill, drilled v When a surfer is knocked from the board and churned up in the wave syn; pounded, slammed, worked drop v To move from the peak down the face tp the bottom of the wave. drop in v The initial act of catching a wave and dropping down the face. drop in n An extremely offensive act of cutting off another surfer as he/she is riding a wave. Drop in shout n What a surfer yells to let other surfers know that he has the wave and they should pull back or get out of the way. "My wave!", "Got it!", Coming through!", "I'm on it" dropping off v. When a swell begins to diminish. dry reef n When the water is sucked up and there is exposed reef. Definitely not a good thing to see when pulling into a barrel. dry suit n A neoprene rubber full body suit, as thick as 5mm, that does not allow water to leak in. Longjohn winter underwear is usually worn under it. It necessary equipment for places like Oregon or Maine in the winter. dry tube n A tube ride in which the surfer emerges from the tube without it closing on him. duck dive n A maneuver used to dive under a breaking or broken wave when paddling out. duct tape n Silver colored, heavy duty tape that is resistant to water. Used for on-the-spot ding repair and almost anything else that needs fixing. dude n 1) A surfing enthusiast, another surfer who is your friend 2) How a surfer might refer to someone whose name they do not know. "Hey dude, what's happening?", "Dude, I'm so stoked." dweeb n geek, nerd |
