🥾 Costa Rica is a hiker’s paradise — from cloud forests and volcanoes to waterfalls and coastal jungles, there are incredible trails for all experience levels. Here’s a curated list of some of the best hiking opportunitiesacross the country: 

🌋 Iconic Volcano & Mountain Hikes
1. Cerro Chirripó
  • Where: Chirripó National Park (Southern Central Valley)
  • Why it’s special: Highest peak in Costa Rica (~3,820 m), epic panoramic sunrise views and diverse ecosystems from cloud forest to alpine.
  • Level: Very challenging (multi-day with reservations required) 
2. Arenal Volcano Trails
  • Where: Near La Fortuna
  • Highlights: Forest paths, lava fields from past eruptions, great views of Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal.
  • Level: Easy to moderate (various trail options) 

🌲 Rainforest & Wildlife Walks
3. Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
  • Where: Monteverde (Puntarenas/Alajuela)
  • Why hike it: Lush cloud forest with abundant biodiversity, suspension bridges, and excellent birdwatching (e.g., quetzal).
  • Level: Easy to moderate loops available 
4. Arenal Hanging Bridges
  • Where: Near Arenal / Mistico Park

7. Rio Celeste & Tenorio Volcano
  • Where: Tenorio Volcano National Park
  • Highlights: Unique turquoise river and waterfall amidst lush jungle — a magical scenery hike.
  • Level: Moderate (15 km approx) 
8. Nauyaca Waterfalls Trail
  • Where: Near Dominical, Puntarenas

🚶 Camino de Costa Rica
  • What it is: A 280 km cross-country hiking route from the Caribbean to the Pacific.
  • Why it’s epic: Combines remote forests, coffee lands, indigenous territories and major scenic diversity — a true Costa Rican thru-hike.
  • Level: Hard (long trek; good planning needed) 

🧡 Tips for Hiking in Costa Rica
  • Footwear: Closed-toe shoes or sturdy hiking boots are typically required on most official trails. 
  • Guides: Some multi-day or remote hikes (like Corcovado or Chirripó) require guides or permits. 
  • Weather: Trails can be muddy in the rainy season (May–November).
