Scuba Diving in Costa Rica

🐠 1. Pacific Northwest – Guanacaste (most popular & accessible)🗺️ Main Regions
  • Playas del Coco, Tamarindo, Flamingo, Potrero / Playa Conchal – great for local dives and island trips.
📍 Typical Dive Trips & Prices (per person)
  • Local 2-tank boat dives – ~$85–$115 USD
  • Local night dive – ~$75–$100 USD
  • Catalina Islands (Islas Catalinas) – 2 tanks – ~$115–$140 USD
  • Catalina Islands – 3 tanks – ~$145–$170 USD
  • Bat Islands (Islas Murciélago) – ~$180–$210+ USD (seasonal, usually May–October)
  • Special guided options to Bat Islands – ~$285–$305 USD from some operators
👉 Operators here also often sell multi-dive packages (e.g., 4–10 dives, 2–5 days) from around $195–$475+ USDdepending on number of dives and duration.

🐢 2. Pacific Southwest – Osa Peninsula / Caño Island (more remote, richer marine life).                                📍 Drake Bay / Bahía Drake – Isla del Caño
  • Daily dive trips (2 dives) – ~$155 USD
  • 3-dive day – ~$210 USD
  • Exclusive small-group dive – ~$180 USD
📍 PADI Courses (Caño Island)
  • Open Water Diver (3 days) – ~$410–$460 USD
  • Advanced Open Water – ~$370–$440 USD
📍 Note: Caño Island is known for its healthy reefs and sightings of turtles, rays, reef sharks, and schools of fish.

🐬 3. Central / Southern Pacific – Manuel Antonio & Uvita.                                                                                 This region offers reef dives and wrecks — and Caño diving is often accessed from here, though visibility in some coastal locations (e.g., Quepos) can vary.
Typical prices are similar to other Pacific day trips, often $85–$200+ per boat dive package depending on operator and distance.

🪸 4. Caribbean Coast (Puerto Viejo / Limón / Uvita Island)
  • Known for different reef ecosystems and wreck dives (e.g., around Isla Uvita).
  • Diving here is less developed — prices vary widely but expect similar ballparks ($80–$200+) depending on operator and whether boat or shore dives.

🚢 5. Cocos Island National Park (World-Class, but expensive)
  • Liveaboard dive trips only — no regular day boat; takes ~36+ hours marine travel each way.
  • Typical liveaboard diving: ~$4,500–$6,500 USD for ~10 days with ~25–30 dives.
👉 These are expensive but legendary trips with hammerheads, big pelagics, and remote reef ecosystems.
