Backwash (Golfo Dulce) Surf Report and Forecast

                             Matapalo

Matapalo is an incredible steep, powerful right hand break. It is the farthest out of three breaks located at Cabo Matapalo which sits on the extreme tip of the Osa Peninsula. Because it sits on the open ocean it is a more consistent than other beaches in the area but the wave in general are not very consistant. There are three point breaks that can each be world-class under the right conditions. Waves can reach triple overhead and breaks for up to 300 meters with the right swell. The best conditions are with a west/southwest swell at low to mid tide. High tide can be mushy. When the conditions are good you can expect a crowd of 25 + in the lineup and the "locals" are not always friendly. Even though many of the "locals' might have arrived in Matapalo only a week before you they can be very territorial so just humble up a bit, give some respect, and you will be OK.

Cabo Matapalo is one of the still remote areas of Costa Rica and boasts dense, beautiful rainforests and pristine beaches. There are hotels that are clean and simple but no restaurants or shops in the area. The hotels are clean but simple and include meals. Don't expect the amenities of high priced hotels, though you will pay the price of one.
