Picture
Playa Grande is an A-Frame kind of wave located about 8 km north of Tamarindo. It is about a 20 min. car ride or a 30 min. walk along the beach. With a good south swell it can seriously rock and is probably the Tamarindo area's most consistent break. The beach itself is somewhat flat and at low tide tends to close out. At mid to high tide, it produces a hollow, makable, and forgiving A-Frame lefts and rights. It breaks best in front of the Hotel Las Tortugas. It is also the most crowded spot. It's always bigger than in town and usually will have something to ride. Grande can be flat at low tide and change to overhead in an hour as the tide comes in. Grande works best with a south/southwest swell on an incoming tide with an east wind and can put out fun, hollow overhead waves. There are a number of possible accomadation possibilities but not much in the way of nightlife.
