Boyero! A Cultural Tradition
San Antonio de Escazu is a sleepy mountain town located about 7 km south of San Jose. Although it is in close proximity to "city" life, the way of life, and traditions, of agricultural Costa Rica are alive and well and being passed down to future generations. Once a year, San Antonio holds it's Festival de Boyero, held in early March, which celebrates the Costa Rica country lifestyle, and local cowboys (almost everyone) show off their prized stock. A wonderful part of the celebration is the parade around the park in the town center with a procession of beautifully painted carts being pulled by some of the biggest steers you have ever seen!
The celebration lasts a week with nightly live music events, a bazaar full of handicrafts from the area, and nights of fireworks! The Boyero festival is a fantastic way to experience Costa Rica culture and a little bit of real true Costa Rica!
