Costa Rica Festivals and Celebrations

March

Dia de los Boyeros

Each year in early March in the sleepy mountain town, located only about 7 km from downtown San Jose, the traditions and way of life of agricultural Costa Rica is celebrated when local cowboys (the real deal) show off their prize stock. A wonderful part of the celebration is the parade around the park in the town center with a procession of beautifully hand-painted ox-carts being pulled by some of the biggest steers you have ever seen! The celebration lasts a week with nightly live music, a bazaar full of handicrafts from the area, and nightly fireworks. The bolero Festival is a fantastic way to experience Costa Rican culture and a little bit of the real Costa Rica!

Día de San Jose

A largely Catholic country, Costa Rica celebrates many religious holy days. Saint Joseph is the patron saint of San Jose and is recognized, and celebrated on this day with parades and special masses held in the churches. It is an official national holiday.

National Orchid Show

Held during mid-march, the National Orchid Show presents more than 300 species of orchids.

Semana Santa (Easter Week)

The week  before Easter Sunday, this year March 27, is a week where most everything closes down. Local people plan trips to the beach and by Thursday virtually everything shuts down, including public transportation which does not run on Thursday or Friday. Sales of alcohol is curtailed Thursday through Sunday. Religious processions and masses take place at all Catholic churches
