                            Hanging Ten

To fall off the front of a shairy   adj.    dangerous, risky, scary. 


hammer   n.   The lip of a wave when it comes down on a surfer.


hammered   v.   When a surfer is hit and  pounded  by a lip of a wave.


hand gun   n.   Used in body surfing, a small hand held apparatus to help in planing.


hang five   v.   When a surfer rides far up on the board with the toes of one foot over the nose.


hang loose   a term that originated in Hawaii that means "everything's cool". Often accompanied with a 
                     hand gesture called a Shaka.


hang ten   v.   When a surfer rides up on the nose of a longboard with the toes of both hanging over.


 hang time  n.  First used by Peter Townend, and taken from American football use, to refer to the amount
                        of time in the air when performing an aerial maneuver.


haole  (howl-ee)  n.   A Hawaiian term that refers to a white person in Hawaii, or a surfer from the mainland.
                                 Can be good or bad to called depending on the context in which it is used.


hoale rot   n.    A skin fungus that some surfers get when visiting Hawaii. Treated with Phisoderm.


happening   adj.    When something is great, cool, or fun. "The waves are really happening today" or 
                              "That place is a happening spot."


hard bottom turn   n.    When a surfer makes a bottom turn and really leans into it so that  his/her body is 
                                     almost parallel to the water's surface.


hard-breaking   adj.   Describes a wave that breaks with a lot of energy and force.


hardcore, hard-core   adj.    A popular word in surf culture that describes things that are very intense.
                                            "Charley is a hardcore surfer."


Hard Rail   n.    The rail of a surfboard that has a sharper, more defined edge.


harsh   adj.  

Header v.  To fall of the front of a surfboard, head first.

Heavy adj.  Big, sometimes dangerous waves.

Helicopter  n.  A move in surfing when the surfer spins their board around from its nose.

Hit the Lip  v.  When a surfer turns their board to hit the hit the lip of a breaking wave. 

Hodad  adj/n  A person who hangs around where surfing happens at the beach but does not surf.

Hollow  adj.  Whern a wave breaks and forms a hollow tube or barrel
