Costa Rica Festivals and Celebrations
September
Independence Day
On September 15, 1821, the countries of Central America, including Costa Rica (see about Costa Rica) gained its independence from Spain. Costa Rica, and the rest of Central America celebrate on the same date with parades, fiestas, traditional programs in the schools, traditional dress and food, and street parties. The "Freedom Torch" is passed from Guatemala through the Central American countries by a relay of runners and is delivered to Cartago. The moment it arrives everything stops throughout the country to sing the National Anthem together. In the schools the children make faroles, which are a type of lantern with candles and usually designed to depict a patriotic theme, and carry their faroles in a parade through their towns.
